Ian Jones

Ian "The Kamo Kid" Jones is as exciting a speaker as he was an an All Black forward.

Jones

Born in 1967 Ian Jones, with 79 test caps, is the second most capped All Black of all-time (only Sean Fitzpatrick with 92 caps has more) and the most-capped second row in the history of the game, Ian Jones’s great grandfather, ‘Bunny’ Finlayson, played for New Zealand in the 1920s. Jones made his debut in 1990 against Scotland at Carisbrooke and marked the occasion with a try.

Almost exactly six years later, on the same ground and against the same opposition, he celebrated his 50th cap with another try. Jones’ 46 appearances in the second row alongside Robin Brooke are a record in Test rugby.

Hailing from the Whangarei suburb of Kamo at the top of the North Island, he had the nickname of the “Kamo Kid”. He played his Super-12 rugby for the Chiefs and scored a hat-trick of tries for them in 1997 against the Waratahs. He scored 42 points in his career. His NPC career was with North Harbour.

He, along with John Eales, revolutionised their position in the 90's with their strength combined with mobility and great ball skills.

He suffered criticism in his early years, about his perceived lack of bulk to become one of New Zealand rugby's greatest ever locks. He left the New Zealand game in 1999 to finish out his playing days with English club Gloucester.

In the Super 12 Ian made 38 appearances, often as captain, for the Chiefs between 1996 and 1999.

Ian returned to New Zealand in 2002 and is now a regular television commentator with Sky TV.
