Raybon Kan

Raybon Kan is one of New Zealand's highest profile comedians. Penguin Books have just released his new book, "An Asian at my Table"

Kan

In 1999, two magazines, Metro and North and South, declared Raybon Kan (pronounced Can) Best Comedian. His sellout live shows from “An Asian at my Table” to “Raybon of the Lost Ark” have won the former lawyer a reputation for thought-provoking comedy. This reputation has spread internationally. Named by Melbourne’s Age newspaper as one of the highlights of the Melbourne Comedy Festival, Raybon has also been invited twice to the Olympics of comedy, the prestigious Montreal Comedy Festival (1998 and 2001).

As an MC or guest speaker, his hallmarks are sophistication, topicality and warmth. As a debater, he is literally world class: as a student, he led the Victoria University team to 2nd place in the World Universities Debating Championships, pipped by Oxford in the final.

In 2002, his comic analysis spiced up TV3’s election night coverage, and he was chosen to judge aspiring comics on TV1’s reality series, So You Think You’re Funny.

Raybon is an author, actor and a prolific writer with his articles and commentary appearing in many publications.

Raybon's column appears weekly in the Sunday Star Times. As an actor he can be seen in the upcoming films Tongan Ninja (directed by Jason Stutter) and Spooked (directed by Geoff Murphy).

But Raybon's first love is live stand up comedy and in September 2004 he touredNew Zealand with his brand-new stand-up comedy show, Raybs Against the Machine: The Wrath of Kan.

The 14-city tour was the most extensive tour Raybon has embarked on. “I’m going to some places which aren’t even in capital letters on the map,” he said. “It’s not so much a tour: I feel like an explorer. I don’t know if these places get told their temperature on the news. I’ll see if I can get somewhere renamed to Raybonville or Raybonburg. Maybe nobody will mind.”

Raybon can ad anew dimesnion to any conference or product launch as MC, comedian or after dinner speaker.
