Michael Barrymore was born in Bermondsey in 1952, the breeding ground for many famous stars, including Charlie Chaplin, Max Bygraves and Tommy Steele.
Having won New Faces Michael’s big break came when he joined Russ Abbott’s Television Madhouse. His own top-rated series with Thames Television ‘The Michael Barrymore Show’ soon followed. Michael appeared on many Royal Variety Performances and his name soon became synonymous with British humour. He is renowned as a multi-award winning entertainer, presenter and performer for his show’s Strike It Lucky, Strike It Rich and Barrymore.
Throughout his career he has won 13 awards voted for by the public from the National Television Awards, ranging from Most Popular Programme (twice) to Best Programme (four times), Best Television Entertainer (four times) and Best Comedy and Best Performance. He also received the Special Recognition Award in 1999.
Michael has won 5 Comedy Awards voted for by the television industry, two Royal Television Society Awards and won the Silver award at the New York Festival for Best International Television programme ‘Barrymore’ and the following year was awarded the Gold award for the same category for ‘Barrymore’.
His first ever comedy drama series, Bob Martin afforded him two further awards at the National Television Awards in 2000.
In November of 2001 Barrymore was again voted by the public as Britain’s Best Television Entertainer.
Michael was delighted to become a resident of New Zealand in March of 2004. During this period he was on a live tour of the ‘Heartland’ of New Zealand receiving standard ovations and positive press reviews.
Since relocating to New Zealand Michael has been MC for a variety of corporate and social events.
Michael has co-compared fashion shows, co-auctioneered and performed at a varied range of social and a wide range of corporate functions.
He is actively involved with various charities and regularly attends and lends his support wherever he can.
