| Georgina Beyer became the first transsexual Mayor in the world in 1995. In 1999 she became the first transsexual member of any parliament in the world. Today is one of the most sought after speakers internationally. |

What are the chances that a former prostitute could be elected as Mayor and a Member of Parliament? And what if that person was also a transsexual? The odds may seem insurmountable, but Georgina Beyer, the former prostitute and transsexual achieved the impossible.
Undergoing a sex change operation in 1984 she was elected to the Carterton District Council in 1993, and became Mayor in 1995.
Georgina was born in 1957, as she grew up she realised she was a woman trapped inside a male body. Her book CHANGE FOR THE BETTER - the story of GEORGINA BEYER published in 1999 and reprinted again in 2002 by Random House chronicled her amazing story of personal triumph.
Also in 2002 her documentary GEORGIE GIRL was screened on POV in America (an audience of 250 million), on CBC Canada, Channel 4 in the UK, Scotland, Ireland and SBS in Australia
Georgina was raised in Taranaki by her Grandparents until aged 4½. When her mother remarried she returned to Wellington for schooling, attending Wellesley College and then Onslow College. In 1970 the Beyer family moved to Auckland, where Georgina attended Papatoetoe High School.
But Georgina was always destined for the theatre. Her theatrical career started when she won the College Cup for Drama in 1972. Following her nomination for best actress in the Guild of Film & Television Arts Award in 1987 she continued acting in Film, TV, Theatre and Cabaret until 1989 when she returned to Wellington in 1990.

George then moved to Carterton in the Wairarapa and enrolled on an Access Scheme, soon after she was teaching on the course and then became course administrator employed by the Carterton Community Centre.
In 1992 Georgina became a broadcaster for the morning show at TodayFM, the first FM radio station in the Wairarapa for 3 months.
Late in 1992 she ran for the Carterton District Council in the local body elections becoming the highest polling unsuccessful candidate, losing by 14 votes. In 1993 won a by-election with a clear majority.
1995 elected Mayor with a 48% majority. 1998 re-elected Mayor with 90% majority. 1999 elected Member of Parliament for Wairarapa with a 32% swing from National to Labour.

Law & Order Select Committee Local Government & Environment Select Committee MMP Review Select Committee - now disbanded with its work complete Primary Production Select Committee Also served on the following Labour caucus committees: Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Mâori Caucus Primary Production & Rural Affairs Local Government, Environment, Broadcasting and Conservation Arts Culture and Heritage Rainbow Caucus Committee Social Services, Justice Cultural Caucus Committee Resigned as Mayor of Carterton in March 2000.
